HIV Test Kit Info
67What does your HIV test result mean?
If you are using a home test kit, it will ascertain if the user has HIV antibodies, and therefore exposure to the HIV virus.
Please note that the Test Kit is an aid only to identify an individual at that point of time. Doctors advise that the typical period of time between first contact and a positive test indication can be up to 90 days.
If you have a negative test result, this only means:
· no antibodies to HIV were found in your blood at the time of testing
· you either have not been infected by the HIV or your exposure to the virus was too recent for antibodies to be formed and to be detected.
· Most people develop antibodies about 2 - 12 weeks after exposure. A negative test result does not mean:
· that you are immune to the virus
· that you are protected from future infection

Why get tested early?
Earlier diagnosis and entry to care are associated with better prognosis and survival.
Among HIV-infected persons with CD4+ cell counts of 201--350 cells/µL Studies have shown initiating antiretroviral therapy was associated with reduced mortality, compared with delaying such therapy until <200 cells/µL
Late testing results in missed opportunities for preventing HIV infections. During the time between HIV infection and diagnosis, infected persons can transmit HIV to others when they engage in practices that put their partners at risk. HIV transmission could be reduced by increasing awareness of HIV status through early testing. Knowledge of HIV serostatus promotes adoption of safer sexual practices.
What do I do if I am tested positive?
It is imperative that a positive HIV test result be followed by a Western Blot or PCR test performed by a doctor or clinic to confirm if you are indeed HIV positive. Since NO test or test kit is infallible, it is best to confirm test results by using a licensed medical testing facility.
